چکیده

The phase diagrams at high temperature of SU(N) gauge theories with massive fermions are calculated by numerically minimizing the one-loop effective potential. We consider fermions in the Fundamental (F), Adjoint (Adj), Antisymmetric (AS), and Symmetric (S) representations, for N from 3 to 9, with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions applied. For one flavour of AS/S (Dirac) fermion with periodic boundary conditions the C-breaking phase is favoured perturbatively for all values of the fermion mass. In the case of one flavour of adjoint Majorana fermion, and periodic boundary conditons, the deconfined phase is favoured for any fermion mass. For one or more adjoint Dirac fermion (two or more Majorana fermions) we find partiallyconfining phases as well as new phases with unusual properties. Our results for SU(3) and SU(4) are consistent with our lattice simulations of a related model.

Phases of N = ∞ QCD - like gauge theories on S 3 × S 1 and nonperturbative orbifold - orientifold equivalences

We study the phase diagrams of N = ∞ vector-like, asymptotically free gauge theories as a function of volume, on S3 × S1. The theories of interest are the ones with fermions in two index representations [adjoint, (anti)symmetric, and bifundamental abbreviated as QCD(adj), QCD(AS/S) and QCD(BF)], and are interrelated via orbifold or orientifold projections. The phase diagrams reveal interesting ...

Zero Temperature Chiral Phase Transition in SU(N) Gauge Theories.

We investigate the zero temperature chiral phase transition in an SU(N) gauge theory as the number of fermions Nf is varied. We argue that there exists a critical number of fermions N c f , above which there is no chiral symmetry breaking or confinement, and below which both chiral symmetry breaking and confinement set in. We estimate N c f and discuss the nature of the phase transition. An SU(...

Center symmetry and the orientifold planar equivalence

We study the center symmetry of SU(N) gauge theories with fermions in the two–index representations, by computing the effective potential of the Polyakov loop in the large–mass expansion on the lattice. In the large–N limit and at non–zero temperature, we find that the center symmetry is ZN for fermions in the adjoint representation and just Z2 for fermions in the (anti)symmetric representation...

Volume independence in large Nc QCD-like gauge theories

Volume independence in large Nc gauge theories may be viewed as a generalized orbifold equivalence. The reduction to zero volume (or Eguchi-Kawai reduction) is a special case of this equivalence. So is temperature independence in confining phases. A natural generalization concerns volume independence in “theory space” of quiver gauge theories. In pure Yang-Mills theory, the failure of volume in...
